OnWake Privacy Policy

Soverain s.r.o. Last updated: 25 October 2026

This is the privacy policy of OnWake, our Android app that puts a language study card on your lock screen and changes it each time you wake the phone. Its name on Google Play is OnWake: Learn on Lock Screen (package cz.soverain.onwake). As §2 of our general Privacy Policy provides for a product with its own policy, this page, not the general one, covers the app. The general policy still covers this website and any email you send us.

In short

  • OnWake collects no personal data. The app itself sends nothing to us or to anyone else. Android's own backup and Google Play's crash reports work outside the app; sections 5 and 7 say what they carry.
  • It has no internet access. The app does not ask Android for permission to use the internet, so Android does not let it connect to anything.
  • No ads, no analytics, no accounts, no tracking and no purchases. The app contains no code from advertising, analytics or crash-reporting services.
  • What it stores is kept on your phone: your settings and the order of the cards. Uninstalling the app or clearing its data deletes them from the phone. If Android backup is on, Android may keep a copy in your Google account and put it back if you install OnWake again (sections 5 and 9).

2. What the app stores on your phone

OnWake keeps a few small settings files in its own private storage on your phone. Android keeps that storage apart from other apps, which cannot read it. The files hold:

  • your choices: the language, which kinds of cards to show (for example hiragana, kanji or words), the colour theme, whether the pronunciation in Latin letters and the reading in kana are shown, how high on the screen the card sits, and the text size;
  • your place in the cards: for each language, the order the cards come in and which card is next;
  • for "Lock screen only" mode: whether it is switched on, when you switched it on, and the number Android gave the lock screen picture the app set, so the app can tell its own picture from one you chose later.

None of this says who you are. The app stores no name, email address, contacts, location, photos, device identifiers or record of when you use the phone. The cards themselves are built into the app.

Storing these settings on your phone is strictly necessary for the app to do what you asked it to, which is why the app does not ask your consent for it (§89(3) of the Czech Electronic Communications Act, Act No. 127/2005 Coll., as amended).

3. What the app reads on your phone, and why

To work, the app asks Android for a few things:

  • that the screen has just turned off, so the next card is ready the next time you wake the phone;
  • which wallpaper is set: which live wallpaper is on the home and lock screens, only to see whether there is one and whether it is OnWake's, and the number Android gives the lock screen picture. The app uses these to know whether its card is showing, to warn you before it replaces a lock screen picture of your own, and to avoid removing a picture or wallpaper it did not set. It never opens, reads or copies your pictures;
  • when the phone restarts, the app is updated or you open the app, whether "Lock screen only" mode should carry on. On Android 14 and later, after a restart or when you open the app, it also reads Android's record of how the app last stopped, so that if you stopped it yourself (for example with Force stop), it stays off.

All of this is used on the phone, at that moment, for that purpose only.

4. Permissions

PermissionWhat it is for
Set wallpaper"Lock screen only" mode puts the card on your lock screen, and takes it off again when you switch the mode off, so your lock screen shows your home screen wallpaper.
Run a foreground service"Lock screen only" mode needs a running part of the app to notice the screen turning off.
Show notificationsThe notice that "Lock screen only" mode is running, with its Stop button, and a one-off notice if the mode pauses because your lock screen picture was changed. Android 13 and later ask you first, and the mode still works if you say no.
Run at startupSwitches "Lock screen only" mode back on after the phone restarts, if you left it on.
Prevent the phone from sleepingKeeps the phone awake for a moment after the screen turns off (never more than 10 seconds), so the next card is set in full.

OnWake does not ask for internet access, location, contacts, camera, microphone, your photos or files, or the advertising ID.

5. Android backup

If backup is on in Android's settings, Android may copy the app's settings and your place in the cards into the backup it keeps in your Google account, and put them back whenever OnWake is installed again, on a new phone or on this one. Android also carries them across when you move to a new phone with a cable or Android's transfer tool. Android does that copying under Google's terms and Google's Privacy Policy, not us, and we cannot see the backup. Whether "Lock screen only" mode is on is kept out of backups and transfers, so restoring them never switches the mode on without asking you. You can turn backup off, or manage backups, in Android's settings and your Google account.

6. Your lock screen picture

In "Lock screen only" mode the app gives Android a picture of the card, and Android keeps it as your lock screen wallpaper. Before replacing a lock screen picture of your own, the app warns you, because it does not keep a copy of that picture. When you switch the mode off, the app removes its card and your lock screen shows your home screen wallpaper. If you uninstall the app or clear its storage while the mode is on, Android keeps showing the last card until you choose another lock screen picture.

7. What we receive

Nothing from the app. OnWake has no server and nothing in it contacts one.

Google Play, not OnWake, gives us figures about the app in our Google Play Console account: install numbers, ratings, and crash and performance reports that Google collects from phones whose owners let Android share usage and diagnostics data with Google. We use them to find and fix problems in the app. We do not try to work out from them who anyone is.

Reviews you post on Google Play are public and show the name on your Google account. In Play Console we also see when each review was posted or last changed and, for some reviews, your phone's make and model, details such as its screen size, its Android version, the app version and your language. We read reviews and may reply to them there; Google then tells you we replied.

For these reports and reviews Soverain is the controller. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in keeping the app working and in answering the people who use it (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). We do not copy them out of Play Console, and Google decides how long it keeps them. You can object at privacy@soverain.cz. What Google collects when you use Google Play and Android is covered by Google's Privacy Policy.

If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write. We handle it as §5.4 of our general Privacy Policy describes.

8. Sharing

We share nothing from the app with anyone, because we receive nothing from it. We do not pass on the reports or reviews we see in Play Console either, and we do not sell data.

9. How long things are kept, and how to delete them

Everything the app stores stays on your phone until you delete it. To delete it from your phone, uninstall OnWake, or open Android's Settings → Apps → OnWake → Storage → Clear storage (the menu names differ a little between phones). Neither deletes a copy in your Google backup: Google keeps and deletes that under its own backup rules. Google does not let you delete OnWake's copy on its own: turning backup off on the phone, or deleting your backup data in your Google account, also deletes the backup of your other apps.

The app sends us nothing, so we hold nothing from it to give you a copy of or to delete. For your Google Play reviews and any email you send us, you have the rights listed in §11 of our general Privacy Policy, and you can edit or delete a review yourself on Google Play. Crash reports do not say who you are, so we cannot find yours to give you a copy or delete it; you can still object to our use of them (§7). Write to privacy@soverain.cz with any question; we answer within one month. You can also complain to a data protection authority: ours is the Úřad pro ochranu osobních údajů, Pplk. Sochora 27, 170 00 Praha 7, Czech Republic (uoou.gov.cz), or you can go to the one where you live.

10. Security

The app's settings sit in Android's private storage for the app, which other apps cannot read. The app itself sends nothing off your phone. Only Android's own backup and phone-to-phone transfer (§5) can copy the settings elsewhere. Google says that on Android 9 and later, with a screen lock set, that backup is encrypted end to end with your PIN, pattern or password.

11. Children

OnWake is meant for learners aged 13 and over and is not directed at younger children. It collects no data from anyone, whatever their age.

12. Changes to this policy

If a future version of OnWake handles data differently, we will update this page before that version is released, and change the date at the top. Dated changes will be listed at the bottom of this page.

Shrnutí česky

OnWake nesbírá žádné osobní údaje a nemá přístup k internetu. Sama aplikace nic neposílá nám ani nikomu jinému. V aplikaci nejsou reklamy, analytika ani účty.
